Mary is a graduate of Bennington College and a resident of Bennington. She has won critical acclaim for her ten books of poetry.

The Vermont Arts Council provides grants for artists and art groups in Vermont working in all genres. Writers and poets should go to the link above for information on grant applications and specific literary programs.
The Poetry Society of Vermont welcomes all Vermont poets, including students. The Society has many activities, including poetry contests and when possible, monthly and twice a year meetings. For the past several years, thousands of Vermont high school students have participated in the Poetry Out Loud State recitation competitions, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Vermont Council on the Arts.
Your high school is invited to participate!
Poetry Out Loud is a wonderful program for students. The program helps the develop Stage and speaking skills, confidence and a love of poetry. Poetry really needs to be spoken to truly be enjoyed. Poetry Slams are events in which adults and students read and perform poetry for awards and prizes. There are many local events and even a National competition. Check with your local poetry group for the nearest Slam event and Slam schedules. Write Action is a group of writers in Brattleboro that welcomes all Vermont writers of all genres. The group provides writing contests (for students and adults), conferences (when possible) and critique groups. You are also invited to receive Write Action’s newsletter. Established in 1929, the League of Vermont Writers the League welcomes all Vermont writers. When possible, they hold four gatherings per year across the State, rotating venues to serve members across the state. This movement has taken on an unofficial pattern with the Winter Program being held in the Burlington area, the Spring Program near Rutland, the Summer Program alternating between the north and south end of the state, and the Fall Program occurring mid-state. The League works to provide opportunities for writers to network with publishers and with each other. Please see link above for calendar information.
The Burlington Writers Workshop is a community of writers supporting writers to create their best work. The group list current membership as over 2,300 writers. The group hosts workshops in Burlington, Montpelier, and Middlebury (when possible). The group is also currently meeting on Zoom. Please see link above for details.
The Vermont Conference on Christianity and the Arts is open to all Vermont writers. The Vermont conference seeks to equip, encourage, support, and otherwise minister to artists of Christian faith. About the author:Steven Robert Heine is an American poet and author. He has spent much of his life supporting poetry projects and events. He is the author of 8 volumes of poetry. In 2011 he was seriously injured in a fall that left him in great pain and almost unable to walk. He suffered a stroke in 2023. Heine receives no disability and relies on a small pension and retirement income. He is no longer able to make public appearances.

Steven Robert Heine is a West Coast poet & author. He has traveled extensively through the United States, including many trips to Vermont. Heine has spent his life promoting poetry; serving as founder for many poetry contests. He is the author of fifteen books, including poetry, history and his own short auto-biographies. His books can be found on Ebay, Amazon and Amazon Kindle.
Heine was crippled in a fall in 2011 and now makes very few public appearances.
